1950 Humber Imperial MkII, coach-built by Thrupp & Maberly. Smooth 4.1 litre 6 cylinder engine and 4 speed all synchromesh column change gearbox all driving perfectly when it was put away 12 years ago. The car attended numerous shows right up until the time it was taken off the road, shows where she attracted a great deal of admiration (not least due to her very imposing appearance). Although favoured by Royalty and governments these large Humbers are now rare. Very few big Humbers survive whilst almost all Thrupp & Maberly bodied Rolls Royce cars of the same era are still in existence.
Based upon a really solid heavy chassis which appears to never have needed any welding. Good condition bodywork (aluminium doors), stainless steel exhaust system, good tyres, chrome & paintwork sound but now has some micro-blistering in places after being neglected for years. The wooden frame in the bootlid will need some attention/repair. Upholstery excellent, original carpet in the rear but the front/drivers mat will need replacing. Good glass all round, all electrics working perfectly when last used. The car has never had a radio fitted. The semaphore indicators do work but were disconnected in favour of the safer indicators all round.
I recovered the car’s original registration number KOX437 from the DVLA and new plates will need to be put on the car when it is next used (currently wearing the reg DSV123 which was issued by the DVLA some time in the 1980’s) I have the original green log book showing the registration KOX437 it was issued with when new, together with many old MOT’s.
I have owned this lovely old 7 seat limousine for some 20 years and I now realise that at 73 years of age I am no longer fit enough to recommission her, so she really wants a new keeper and needs to be used
The car was, and is, as seen in the photos when I drove it into my garage 12 years ago for maintenance jobs, primarily brake shoe renewal all round and tracking down an oil leak from the engine. I removed the bolted on rear wings to access the brakes and to tidy up the under wing areas, clean up/repair some inner wing rust then repaint and seal, but got no further. The car has just stood ever since. Arthritis and advancing age have prevented me tackling the work.
Included with the car are manuals, V5, many old MOT’s, tax discs, handbooks 2 full sets of NOS head gasket packs, a NOS boxed spare camshaft, engine valves plus various other odd and ends. A brand new carburettor was sourced and fitted immediately before the car was put into storage.
After the car standing (on axle stands) for many years the engine will now not turn over, although I am pretty confident a soak with diesel in the bores will free it off. Obviously all fluids will need changing, brakes overhauled as necessary, the engine oil leak sorted out (I suspect rear crank seal) and a new battery.
Viewings in SW Scotland welcome as are sensible questions. Car will need trailering away. Payment by cleared bank transfer before car is released. No buy-it-now, it’s an auction.
